Change Your Personality, Change Everything with Shannon Sauer-Zavala

SHOW NOTES

Do you have a goal to climb a mountain, but... your day-to-day looks more like watching TV from the couch?

Listen, it turns out you can shift your personality to actually become the person who can reach these really awesome high goals we set for ourselves.

Shannon Sauer-Zavala is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and she works with people to actually shift their personalities away from anxiety and depression and toward their goals.

And did you know those all the rage personality tests are not much more reliable than a Facebook poll?

Seriously. Shannon tells us about the one that matters, The Big 5. It’s basically the gist of the totality of human beings boiled down to 5 overarching traits.

I know, I know you're dying to know what they are. Bear with me because these words totally need publicists: neuroticism, extrovertism, agreeableness vs. antagonism, conscientiousness vs. disinhibition, and openness.

These mumbo jumbo sciency words describe specific tendencies that make up personality and really guide what we are capable of doing.

And guess what? Personality is not static. Actually, Shannon says it gets better with age! Finally, a reason to look forward to the next birthday and stop all this anti-aging bull sh*t!!!

Shannon and I had a great discussion about these 5 traits and what it takes to move the bar to reach those goals!

Surprise, surprise, it has a lot to do with your thoughts! Which—spoiler alert—aren't facts. They are just things you tell yourself. So if you start little by little telling yourself different stuff, you can actually change your behavior AND your personality.

Don’t be fooled and put into a box by personality tests or old habits. You can shift, change, and become whoever you want to be! How cool is that?

WHAT’S INSIDE:

  • How reliable are today’s common personality tests?
  • What are The Big 5?
  • Can your personality really change!?
  • What’s holding you back from your goals and how to push past it.

Finally, we get some validation that we actually get BETTER with age, I mean as far as our personalities go. What personality shifts would you need to make to reach that next big goal?  Let me know on Insta!

Lessons From The Crappy Childhood Fairy with Anna Runkle

Lessons From The Crappy Childhood Fairy with Anna Runkle

SHOW NOTES

Did you have a crappy childhood? No, not just that you didn’t get that doll you wanted at the store when you were 5—I’m talking serious stuff.

Anna Runkle is the Crappy Childhood Fairy; she shares her story of childhood trauma coming from a commune style home filled with alcohol and hard drugs.

She outlines what exactly defines childhood trauma—physical and sexuable abuse, children of addiction, major neglect or abandonment, lack of personhood—and it is important to note that these things are not always a result of parenting and economic status.

Anna hit a trauma storm in her 30s, culminating in a plan to end her life she shared with a friend, and then she had a total awakening. Anna credits this to her daily writing practice.

Yes. Daily writing and restful meditation healed Anna and saved her life. Now, it's clear that it's not a magic wand, and its not just spilling your guts on everything that makes you sad; there is a very specific technique, but for her, when its done consistently, 80% of her problems evaporate.

Dysregulation is a powerful symptom of CPTSD, causing loss of temper and difficulty discerning positive decisions.

Anna shares tips in this episode like how to stop getting triggered, how to create ‘Ninja’ boundaries, and *wait, your really gonna love this one*—diet and exercise. She even talks about how to handle your dysregulated states with loved ones.

Is a diagnosis really necessary? How do you know if you have CPTSD? What do you do next? We get into all of that in the episode, so don't miss this one.

Hey! Even if you had a fantastic childhood, you’re sure to benefit from some of these tips!

WHAT’S INSIDE:

  • What constitutes a crappy childhood?
  • How do you know if you have CPTSD?
  • A daily practice that can evaporate 80% of your problems?
  • Knowing that therapy and medication aren't always the answer.

Anna talks a lot about her very specific writing technique, which she credits a lot of her healing to; be sure to check out the link for that! What resonated most with you today? Do you think you suffer from CPTSD?   Let me know on Insta!

EPISODE 48:

Don't Fall Prey to Wellness Industry Bullshit with Micheal Ulloa and Kate Lyman

Don't Fall Prey to Wellness Industry Bullshit with Michael Ulloa and Kate Lyman

SHOW NOTES

Love fat shaming, coffee enemas, and jade vagina eggs?
This episode is not for you!

Michael Ulloa and Kate Lyman are personal trainers, nutrition coaches, and hosts of the podcast How To: Fitness. They’re on a mission to debunk and throw red flags at all the bullshit you see from *wellness influencers* and other toxic entities in the fitness world.

We talk about aesthetic-based fitness with unattainable marketing like fat burning and zone toning and even FUPA (you know, that totally natural lower belly fat that protects your internal organs)-focused workouts.

Michael and Kate toe the line of setting fitness goals in a way that’s not extreme in one way or another; they take a straight-forward, easy approach that's unique to every client.

That takes us to what feels like a cop-out answer: fitness professionals just trying to do their best have to say over and over, “It depends.”.

Is it healthy to drink smoothie? Well it depends. Is it okay to eat a cookie? Well, it depends. Every question is so relative to an individual's relationship to food and there personal goals, so it really depends and needs education. That's why you should never trust an influencer touting NEVER and ALWAYS. It’s extreme and unsustainable.

Speaking of unsustainable… Michael and Kate touch on barrier-based fitness moguls like Goop; spouting expensive, useless and usually dangerous fitness products.

Like many things in life, there is no absolute. Health and fitness is a spectrum, and its about behaviors, not a quick fix goal.

To find your safe place on the spectrum and stay away from dangerous trends, you can curate your social media feeds with body diversity and positive voices in the industry like myself, Michael, and Kate.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

  • Barrier-based health and fitness—it’s all a bunch of goop.
  • Should you hire a trainer with abs?
  • Tips for curating positive fitness info on social media.
  • Aesthetic-based goals…okay or not?

When I scroll through my social media and see these insane claims and advertisements from my health and wellness colleagues, I feel like, woah, I live in a sketchy part of town? But Michael and Kate, there is a safe place! What do you think of today’s episode?  Let me know on Insta!

Episode 47: Design Your Life With Intention with Tracy Harris

EPISODE 47:

EPISODE 47:

Design Your Life With Intention with Tracy Harris

Design Your Life With Intention with Tracy Harris

SHOW NOTES

Do you have a vision for your life? Are you living it?

Tracy Harris was NOT as a new mother; she was struggling with finding herself in her previous role of teaching (even though she previously loved it), leading her to a major lifestyle shift.

She’s a podcaster and female entrepreneur, helping ‘mums’ find their hustle. (the good kind of hustle, that is.)

You don’t have to work a job or do the things that suck life out of you. Mothers, especially, find themselves in a time of clarity and transition when entering the workforce with unique limitations, risks, and circumstances.

Tracy shares her story of freedom when her family fled South Africa when she was 5 years old and how that led to her strength and desire for freedom for herself and for other women today.

Life is short; Tracy knows that from lived experience, and you just have to go for it.

What’s it take to start your own business as a woman and mum? Tracy highlights important aspects of identity: core values, joy, and genius.

For her lovely audience, she provides this pretty great acronym: FRESH; Freedom, Relationships, Environment, Self, and Hustle.

Now this “FRESH” is going to look different on everybody. What Tracy views as a dream life, what I view as a dream life—they could be the total opposite of your vision, your dreams.

So ladies, mothers, whoever you are, as the great Jim Carrey has said, “you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well do what you love.”

WHAT’S INSIDE:

  • How to quit the thing you hate when it’s not easy or risk free.
  • Who are you? The elements of your identity that can create your business.
  • What does it mean to start FRESH?
  • How mums can hustle and make more time for the family and core values.
  • Designing your life by vision.

Are you living the life you see when you close your eyes? What will it take to get there? What thoughts and behaviors can you change RIGHT FREAKING NOW?  Let me know on Insta!

Episode 46: To Get Jennifer Aniston’s Body do THIS (4 things)

EPISODE 46:

EPISODE 46:

To Get Jennifer Aniston's Body do THIS (4 things)

To Get Jennifer Aniston's Body do THIS (4 things)

SHOW NOTES

This is the tell all episode on how YOU can get Jennifer Aniston’s body.

Spoiler, it’s actually not the hot tips and secret advice you’re thinking. It’s actually pretty standard, boring, fitness advice.

"I drink a lot of water, move my body daily, try to eat whole, fresh foods, and get as much sleep as I can." - Jennifer Aniston, People Magazine

WOAH earth-shattering stuff. Am I right? Props to her, though, for not using her platform to tout some unattainable regimen and keeping it realistic.

Look, wanting to look like a stunning celebrity, I get it.

But wanting nutrition, fitness, and beauty advice from a naturally beautiful person…well it’s kind of ironic, to say the least. (Please hear my plea to get THE Timothy Caulfield, who’s an advocate for this  school of thought, on the show!!)

Here’s the thing…You are you! The only one. Your body is the only one of its kind to have ever existed!!! Why would you wanna trade it for someone else’s????

Because no matter how great you are at Jen’s 4 basic tips for her hot bod….you’ll never have HER hot bod. You’ll have your hot bod.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

  • Jennifer Anniston’s 4 tips to a hot bod.
  • Celebrating your body!
  • Should you trust celebrity beauty advice?

Are those the 4 tips you thought you’d hear? Are you disappointed that they aren't what you thought? What does Jennifer Anniston do differently than YOU and what are you going to do about it? Let me know on Insta!
